Coolant: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly!
Coolant is a vital fluid for your vehicle. The key parts of the cooling system remove heat from the engine and transmission and dissipate the heat to the air outside. The water pump circulates the coolant through the engine, the coolant absorbs the heat, and returns it to the radiator where the heat is dissipated. The thermostat regulates the coolant temperature to keep it consistent for efficient engine performance.
Although coolant does come in multiple colors, green is the most common. Coolant can also be blue, pink, purple, red, yellow or orange. You should always use the correct coolant for your vehicle according to your vehicle manufactures specifications. New coolant prevents rust, corrosion, electrolysis and sludge. It allows the cooling system to perform properly.
In as little as one year, coolant can break down, attack the inside of the engine and cause internal damage. Sludge can clog the cooling system which can cause overheating. Used coolant also loses its anti-freezing protection which is crucial in winter months.
Worn out coolant promotes rust and corrosion which can cause damage to the cooling system parts and can cause leaks. It also causes electrolysis, which is the result of electricity flowing through your cooling system and causing an electrochemical charge across the aluminum. This results in rapid corrosion and severe damage to the components in your cooling system including discoloration, pitting, flaking, and pinholes.
